The Malaysian city of Kota Bharu was founded by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan in 1844. It is the capital, and largest city, of Kelantan State. Its name means “new city” or “new fort” in Malay. Kota Bharu is located approximately 20 km (12 miles) from the border with Thailand.
